At first glance, it seems like a nice tax break for the wealthy. And in a way, it might be.

But more importantly, at a time when the state’s unemployment rate is at 12.2 percent, the proposal in the Legislature to cap the sales tax on yachts at $18,000 could very well be a boon to jobs in Florida’s critical marine industry. The proposal (HB 711, SB 2454), which passed in the House and could be debated in a Senate committee this week, deserves full legislative support.

Florida’s $18.4 billion marine industry supports well over 200,000 jobs, a vast majority of them in South Florida. And the people who have those jobs are not all wealthy by a long shot.
